The brown bear is a large type of brown bear found in the far northwest regions of the North American continent, especially in Canada and Alaska. Although not as large as the polar bear, these bears can grow quite big. Their sharp claws can be up to ten centimeters long.

Explorers Lewis and Clark first described this creature as “grisley,” although exactly what they meant is not 100% clear. They probably referred to the “grizzled” appearance of the bear, with lighter tips in the fur. Brown bears can be distinguished from smaller black bear species in some ways – the brown bear has a prominent shoulder hump, a less narrow face, and its rump is lower than its shoulders.

Although they belong to the order Carnivora, brown bears eat animals and plant matter. They eat fruits and insects, but also attack deer, moose, and other large animals. Fish, especially salmon, make up a large part of the diet of Grizzlies in Alaska and Canada, and this protein-rich diet causes these bears to grow much larger than other Grizzlies.
